Father of the Luo
Ramogi Ajwang is revered as the founding patriarch of the Luo people in Kenya and the ancestor from whom all Kenyan Luo trace their lineage. According to Luo oral tradition, Ramogi led the great migration of the Luo-speaking peoples from the Bahr el Ghazal region in present-day South Sudan, through northern Uganda, and eventually to the shores of Lake Victoria in what is now western Kenya. This epic migration, believed to have occurred over several centuries, is one of the most significant population movements in East African history. Ramogi is credited with establishing the Luo settlement patterns around the Winam Gulf (Kavirondo Gulf) and organizing the clan structure that persists to this day. He is said to have been a wise and just leader who established laws governing land use, marriage, and conflict resolution. The Got Ramogi hill in Yimbo, Siaya County, is named after him and is considered the first settlement site of the Luo in Kenya. Annual cultural festivals are held at Got Ramogi to honor his memory and celebrate Luo heritage.
The Luo migration narrative tells of Ramogi as a visionary leader who received guidance from Nyasaye (God) to lead his people southward to a promised land of fertile shores and abundant fish. He traveled with his family and followers through hostile territories, crossing great rivers and traversing vast savannas. When they finally reached the hills overlooking Lake Victoria, Ramogi declared the land their new home. He climbed the hill now known as Got Ramogi and surveyed the vast waters of Nam Lolwe (Lake Victoria), proclaiming it the dwelling place of the Luo for all generations.
