The Teso Warrior and Community Builder
Omoding is a celebrated figure in Iteso oral tradition, remembered as a warrior, community organizer, and cultural custodian who helped establish the Iteso presence in what is now Busia County in western Kenya. The Iteso are a Nilotic people closely related to the Karamojong of Uganda, and their migration into Kenya is believed to have occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. Omoding is credited with leading one of the key Iteso migration waves from Uganda into the fertile lowlands of present-day Teso sub-county. He organized the settlement of new territories, negotiated boundaries with neighboring Luhya and Luo communities, and established the social structures that would define Iteso life in Kenya. Omoding was known for his prowess in wrestling (a central element of Iteso culture), his skill in cattle raiding, and his diplomatic ability in maintaining peace with neighbors. He established the local iteration of the Iteso clan system and the council of elders (ateker) that governed community affairs. His leadership during the migration and settlement period ensured that the Kenyan Iteso maintained their distinct cultural identity while adapting to their new homeland.
