The Gusii Elder and Rainmaker
Nyakomba is remembered in Gusii oral tradition as one of the most powerful abaragoli (rainmakers) in the community's history. In the agricultural society of the Abagusii, where farming depended entirely on rainfall, the rainmaker held extraordinary social and political power. Nyakomba was said to possess the ability to summon rain during droughts and to withhold it as a form of social sanction against communities that violated customary law. He used a combination of herbal preparations, ritual incantations, and readings of natural signs to predict and influence weather patterns. Beyond his role as rainmaker, Nyakomba served as a senior elder and judge in the Gusii council system, settling land disputes, marriage disagreements, and inter-clan conflicts. His authority was both spiritual and political, and he commanded respect from all Gusii clans. The tradition of rainmaking (oborogi bw'embura) was an important institution in Gusii governance, and Nyakomba represents its most celebrated practitioner. His methods and rituals were passed down through specific lineages, and elements of the rainmaking tradition persisted well into the 20th century.
