The Great Turkana War Leader
Lokerio was one of the greatest military leaders in Turkana history, a war chief (emuron) who organized and led Turkana resistance against multiple enemies including the Ethiopian Dassanech, the Pokot, and eventually the British colonial forces. Lokerio was renowned for his tactical genius, using the vast Turkana terrain to his advantage and deploying hit-and-run tactics that confounded his enemies. He is particularly remembered for his resistance to British military expeditions in the early 1900s. The British launched the Turkana Patrol of 1918, one of the last major colonial military operations in Kenya, partly in response to Lokerio's refusal to submit to colonial authority. Lokerio organized a confederation of Turkana sections and allied warriors to resist British domination, arguing that the Turkana had never been conquered and would not submit willingly. He was also a skilled diplomat who maintained alliances with sections of the Samburu and Rendille when it suited Turkana interests. Lokerio died during or shortly after the 1918 Turkana Patrol, but his resistance ensured that the Turkana remained one of the last communities in Kenya to be fully brought under colonial control.
