The Samburu Prophetess
Lenesaruni is remembered in Samburu oral tradition as a remarkable female prophet and spiritual leader, one of the rare women to hold significant spiritual authority in the patriarchal Samburu society. She was known for her ability to interpret dreams, predict droughts and raids, and communicate with the spiritual world through trance states. Lenesaruni is said to have accurately predicted the great rinderpest epidemic of the 1890s, which devastated cattle herds across East Africa, warning the Samburu to move their herds to higher ground and to set aside food reserves. Those who heeded her warnings survived the catastrophe with their herds largely intact. She also served as a healer, specializing in treating cattle diseases and women's health issues. Her authority was unusual in Samburu culture, where spiritual leadership was typically the domain of male laibons, and her acceptance by the community speaks to the extraordinary nature of her gifts. Lenesaruni's legacy has been invoked by Samburu women's rights advocates as evidence that women have always played important spiritual and leadership roles in Samburu society, even when formal structures excluded them.
